When I try to restore backup files from an external hard drive to my computer, I get an error message that says "backup has not been set up on this computer. An administrator must first create a backup before you can restore files." What is the process for getting all my files back to my computer? I just replaced the hard drive in my computer.

The reason you're seeing this message is because you already have a virus. The virus is trying to convince you to buy stuff.

I recommend scanning your computer for viruses with a real virus scanner like Windows One Care.

Here's a link to a free scan by Windows Once Care.

Hi.. Right now, an error message keep popping up in my computer saying things like "You have a dangerous virus in your system! Install an antivirus right now before your computer crashed!" and there are options like ok (recommended) and cancel. I pressed the ok button, and they began to download the file named malwarebellagreement. I googled the name and found out that it is a fake antispyware which persist us to buy their product by popping error messages up. I have cancelled the download, so I haven't install it yet. But now, the error message keep popping up!! What should I do? Most of the problem solving in the net was to delete all the malware thingy, but I don't have them in my system! Help!!!

Thanks. I found a solution on another tech site that seems to have worked. It appears that the "Black Screen of Death" might actually be a safeguard imbedded in the Vista O/S to thwart pirating copies. For some reason it can be triggered during certain legitmate software installs or upgrades. The improbable solution was to boot up attached to an external monitor. I did and the problem corrected itself. The best part is that the manufacturer's repair disk never took, so I was able to keep all of my data intact.

The maintentance program worked fine and I installed it on a 2nd laptop ( running XP) and encountered no issues.

The emergency repair disk should have erased your hard drive and copied a fresh install on it which would have gotten rid of any errors or corrupt files possibly caused by the software you installed.

Are you sure you properly ran the emergency repair?

I installed a new IOLO maintenance program on my Toshiba laptop, running Windows Vista Home Basic. The install appeared to take and the program did a maintenance review and found 6 areas to be repaired that would improve performance. I ran the repair and was prompted to restart. Upon restart I get a "Black Screen" with nothing but a large white arrow indicating the mouse. Keyboard does not respond, but I can move the arrow/mouse. I tried re-installing O/S with Toshiba emergency disc, still nothing. Computer appears to be working, but I can't see anything.

Fix if Outlook fails in Vista with Office 2007 (most probably you will only have to do #1 to fix your Vista box):

1) Run Office Diagnostics: From Excel 2007, Office Button, Excel Options, Resources, run "MicroSoft Office Diagnostics".

2) With Vista and Office 2007, made the mistake to associate "MapiMail" in Control Panel, Default Programs, Associate a File Type - to Outlook. Fix was to delete in registry:[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
\FileExts\.MAPIMAIL\UserChoice]

Hope this gets out there...8+ hours later to find the fix.

This just started this morning. I got the error message that Windows wasn't able to check for updates, and gave the error code 80080005. I've searched all over the place and have been unable to find a solution for Vista, though apparently it's been an issue for other Windows OS, and has been ongoing since 2006. Anyone know of any fixes for this? I've already checked the wu files to make sure they are set to System, and I've disabled and re-enabled the Windows Auto Updater. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So you're ISP provides internet to you via a wireless network that requires a specific user name and password of your Windows Vista user account.

It seems like you are hooked on to a big WAN network. This is a very odd way of offering internet.

I've never seen this problem, but I do know that the networking stack is very different in Vista. Maybe your ISP's hardware used to connect your computer to their internet is having problems.

I had been going along fine for almost a year and suddenly, Vista isn't liking something about my connection. I called my ISP support and they told me that it was a Vista issue and all I needed to do was create a new user name and password for my internet connection (which they walked me through... had to be changed at the ISP site) and then I needed to have my computer log into the new name/password. No problems after that, until about a week later when it happened again and I had to go through the whole process again.

Is this a known issue, glitch, bug, or what? Is there a fix for this other than renaming, etc? Thanks!

hi, i kmow that when working n a live fie system cd format, you have to set your dvd recording proerties to establish a close session disc, and you have to close the session when your done of course.however, when i place this same disc in the computer for a second time do i have to reset the dvd properties all over again or will the computer read the disc as "close session"since it was established that way wheni first formatted it.

The guide I linked to above will work in XP too. You might want to let it do a full disk check. When Windows does this it senses a possible problem.
