I tried scheduling a check disk under Properties>Tools>Error-checking, but on reboot nothing happens. I ran the command line "chcdsk c: /r", and it says "Access Denied as you do not have sufficient priviledges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode." I'm the administrator (and only user) of this machine. What do I need to do? I have gotten a few pop-ups telling me core files are corrupt, and the gadgets don't work anymore. Where do I start?

Open the command prompt with elevated privileges by going to Start, All Programs, Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then select Run as administrator.
Run the command now and it should work.

Thanks Brent. I did as you said, and it offered to schedule a scan when I next rebooted. Unfortunately, nothing happened again on restart. It booted quickly as it normally does. The problem is that I know I have corrupted sectors on the disk (\Program Files\HP, for example is "corrupt or unreadable"), and I don't know what to do about it.

Thanks again Brent. HP refused to send me a Vista installation DVD. I got two System Recovery DVDs, and there is a dedicated Recovery partition on drive E. I imagine that booting from the recovery disks is different than booting from the installation DVD, right?
(BTW, I tried to just use System Restore, but it refuses too, telling me to run check disk.)

Update: I hit F8 on reboot and accessed advanced boot options and ran Startup Repair, which seems to have fixed the problem.
Thank you so much for your help.
